What we found
A dated countertop, beige tile, and plumbing nobody had looked at
The kitchen had a dated countertop and a beige tile backsplash over solid maple and dark brown cabinetry that was worth keeping. Opening the wall found the plumbing that had been running behind all of it, which is the usual reason a kitchen job grows once it starts.

USG Durock cement board fixed over the opened wall as a tile substrate.
Counter and backsplash
Quartz counter and a full-height quartz backsplash in the same slab, run over the existing cabinets.
Sink and trim
New stainless undermount sink, gooseneck faucet and an over-range microwave.
How it ended
Cement board, not drywall, behind a wet wall
The choice worth pointing at is the substrate: cement board rather than plain drywall behind the run. It costs more and it is the right call anywhere tile meets water over time. The quartz went on over it, counter and backsplash cut from the same slab so the veining runs straight up the wall, and the cabinets that were already there carried the new work.
